Launched today (Monday 13 July), the five-week consultation marks the first formal stage in preparing a new Local Plan under the government's recently introduced plan-making system.

The move follows approval by the Executive at its meeting on Thursday 9 July and marks a significant step towards preventing and tackling anti-social behaviour (ASB) and protecting residents, visitors and businesses in the town centre.

A PSPO allows councils to restrict or prohibit specific behaviours in public areas where they are causing ongoing nuisance or having a detrimental impact on a community’s quality of life, helping to protect the wellbeing of all who use the area. 

These councils will need to create their own distinct brand identities, to help everyone recognise who is delivering local services from April 2027. 

The new brands will be created at no cost by designers working in councils across Surrey. To help inform these designs, residents, businesses, council staff, partners and community groups across Surrey are invited to have a say on the future visual identities of the new East Surrey and West Surrey councils. 

This is the first phase of a wider programme of engagement to help shape the new councils. 

The consultation seeks views on an updated policy designed to reflect the latest government guidance and ensure taxi and private hire services across the borough remain safe, accessible and of a high standard.

The proposed policy includes a number of key changes, such as enhanced training requirements for drivers, including disability awareness, strengthened safety checks, and improved record keeping for operators. 

The works will involve replacing sections of the stair tread plates, which have become loose and cracked, to ensure the subway remains safe and accessible for users.

To allow the works to be carried out safely, the subway will be closed during the following times:

• Wednesday 8 July, 8pm to Thursday 9 July, 6am
• Thursday 9 July, 8pm to Friday 10 July, 6am

Advance warning signage will be displayed ahead of the works, with additional signage in place during the closures to help direct pedestrians along the diversion route.

The flag was raised today (Friday 26 June) in recognition of Armed Forces Day and honours the dedication and service of the UK’s Armed Forces community, including serving personnel, veterans, reservists and their families.

The annual event provides an opportunity for the nation to come together and show support for those who make up the Armed Forces community, past and present.

The Mayor of Woking, Cllr Rob Leach, said: 

Antisocial behaviour can have a serious and lasting impact on individuals and communities, affecting victims’ health, wellbeing and sense of safety.  

In 2025/2026, more than 200 incidents of antisocial behaviour ranging from noisy neighbours to obstructive parking were reported directly to the council’s Community Safety team. Five ASB Case Reviews were initiated by residents due to persistent and ongoing antisocial behaviour. 

Careline is a personal alarm service that allows the user to call for help at the touch of a button, 24-hours a day, helping residents live safely and independently at home. 

The alarm button can be worn discreetly around the neck or wrist and links to a digital alarm unit installed at home.

The system can also support a range of other sensors, including fire, heat and motion, which alerts staff at a telecare centre if there is a problem.

A neighbourhood forum is a community-led group that can be formally designated by the council to create a neighbourhood plan or order for a specific area where there isn’t a town or parish council.

TCMK, which is owned by Thameswey Energy Ltd (TEL), itself a wholly owned Woking Borough Council company, provides district heating, cooling and a private wire electricity network to domestic and business customers in Milton Keynes.

Under the new ownership, services will continue to be provided to existing customers without interruption. All staff currently employed by TCMK will be offered roles with the new operator, supporting continuity of service provision.

The revised policies, approved by the council’s Executive on 11 June 2026, provide a clear and robust approach to rent arrears, repairs and maintenance, gas safety and electrical safety.

The revisions form a central part of the council’s ongoing Housing Improvement Programme and are designed to ensure compliance with the updated Consumer Standards introduced by the Regulator of Social Housing.

The policies provide a framework for how housing services should be delivered, while setting out what tenants can expect from the council and what responsibilities they hold.
