Launched today (Monday 13 July), the five-week consultation marks the first formal stage in preparing a new Local Plan under the government's recently introduced plan-making system.

The Local Plan will guide how the borough develops between 2027 and 2044, helping to determine where new homes, jobs, infrastructure and community facilities should be located, whilst protecting the character, environment and qualities that make the borough a great place to live and work.

This consultation builds on engagement carried out in 2025, when residents shared their priorities and vision for Woking in 2044. Feedback received during that exercise has been analysed and used to inform this latest consultation.

Earlier this year, the government introduced a new approach to preparing Local Plans. Whilst this requires Woking to follow a new process, the views shared by residents in 2025 remain an important part of the evidence base.

The council is now seeking views on whether it has identified the right priorities for the borough in areas covering housing, jobs, infrastructure, transport, climate change and the environment.

Cllr Louise Morales, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Planning, said:

Last year, many of you shared your vision of Woking in 2044 and told us what matters most to you.

That feedback has been extremely valuable and has directly influenced this next stage of work. We're now building on what you told us and continuing the conversation about how our borough should grow and develop in the future.

As we prepare a new Local Plan, we want to hear whether we've identified the right priorities for Woking and whether there are other issues we should be considering.

Your feedback at this stage will help guide the development of the Local Plan before more detailed proposals are brought forward for further consultation.

Following the consultation, the council will publish a summary of the feedback received and use the responses to help prepare the next stage of the Local Plan.

There will be further opportunities for residents and stakeholders to comment as work progresses.
