Publications
Publications are a way of converting downloadable documents into accessible HTML versions instead.
They have both page and section navigation, allowing users to click through each chapter.
Examples:
Creating a new publication
Watch the LGD YouTube video on creating a publication
There are 2 content types to create a publication:
- Publication page
- Publication cover page
Everything you need you should be able to get using publication pages only to stick to them.
Examine the original document and decide how to divide it up
Start by working out how best to split the file up into chapters. Try not to have pages that are too long.
LGD will create chapter navigation allowing users to move through each page.
Create the first publication page
- Add a title - name this the name of the document for example 'Rent Setting Policy’.
- Add a summary. Bear in mind that this text will help people know what larger publication specific pages belong to when they are listed in search. For example, if a page is called 'Effective partnerships’, add summary text to be clear what publication this relates to – for example, adding ‘Chapter 4 of Woking For All, detailing our priorities in creating effective partnership’.
- Click ‘+’ to add content. You will be offered a large choice of components. Generally text components will give you mostly what you need. Sometimes copying from PDFs will involve having to clean up the text, particulate line breaks. Click the ‘+’ to add content below or above each piece of content. You may need to experiment to find the component that meets your needs.
- Page navigation is created automatically if you use H2s. You can't switch this off.
- Add a service contact.
- Open ‘publication outline’ and select ‘Create a new publication’.
- Add a published date.
- Leave the weight as 0 as this will be the top page.
- Open URL alias. You cannot set a parent to the URL so it will not create a breadcrumb. You can override this by switching ‘Create automatic URL alias’ off. You can then create a breadcrumb by placing the page into the section it belongs to. Place policies, strategies etc into /your-council/strategies-policies-plans
- If you want to, you can also add a downloadable version of the file to the first page. First add the file to the media library. Then simply add the ‘Document’ component to the first page and attach the file.
Create the second and subsequent pages
-
Repeat steps 1-4 above.
-
For step 6, open ‘publication outline’ and instead of choosing ‘Create new publication’, choose the name of the page you first created from the drop down list.
-
You then have a second option ‘Parent item’.
-
Generally leave this the same as the publication. However you can select subpages to create two levels of navigation (it will appear indented on the contents menu).
You don’t need to set a published date for each page. When you set the published date on page 1, it then shows on every page in the publication.
Set the weight as ‘1’, and then subsequent pages as 2, 3 etc.
You should be fine to leave the URL alias, as it should pick up the URL you created for page 1.
