Directories

Watch the YouTube directory tutorial

Directories allow you to group together lots of related information, such as:

LGD has:

  • Directory channels (the top level of a directory)
  • Directory venues (including mapping)
  • Directory pages (same as venue but with no mapping)
  • Directory facets (allows users to filter results)

Directory facets

Facets screenshot

Start by thinking about facets. What are the user needs for this content? Imagine you were creating a schools directory, what would a parent want to know?

  • Is the school single gender?
  • Does the school have a religious intake?
  • Is it primary or infant?
  • Where is it?

Once you have considered this, you can create the facets.

  1. First create the facet type. Go to Content>Directory facets. An example would be ‘Gender’.
  2. See the screenshot above – click ‘Add directory facet type’.
  3. Then click ‘Add directory facet’.
  4. Click ‘Gender’, then add the facet, for example ‘male’.
  5. Then add all facets for this facet type.
  6. Then create the next facet type and follow the same process.

Directory channels

Every directory starts with a channel.

In this example:

  • Title is the name of the channel/directory – for example ‘Find a car park’
  • Additional info appears below the title and above the lists of directory entries, introducing the directory.
  • Under ‘Enabled facets’, tick the facets you created for this directory.
  • Under ‘Enabled content types, tick the content type you want to use for this directory,  either venues, pages or both.

The above directory channel sort allows you to order entries either alphabetically or by date.

Directory venues and pages

  • Add the title of the directory entry, in this example the name of the car park.
  • ‘Title used for sorting’ can be used to force entries to the top.
  • ‘Summary’ appears in the entry itself and when shown in search.
  • ‘Additional info’ can be used to give details of the entry, in this example the facilities for this car park.

Channels and facets tab

The channels and facets tab allows you to place the venue into the chosen channel.

You can also select a secondary directory to place it in.

Enquiries tab

The enquiries tab allows you to add phone numbers, emails, web links etc.

Venue tab

The venue tab allows you to add the location with a map. It also creates a pin of the location on the main channel page.

You can also add venue notes. For example, disabled access.

You can also add an image.

A directory page does not have this tab.

The screenshots below show how to add a location. Start by clicking ‘Select location’.

Manually adding address screenshot

Start by seeing if your location already exists under ‘Search existing locations’.

If it does not exist, click ‘Create new address’.

Once you start typing the street address, the system will start a lookup against the installed database of addresses. If the address comes up, just select it.

Latitude and longitude

Sometimes addresses are not found. You can add an address manually by adding the latitude and longitude coordinates. You can find this on Google maps by right clicking a location.

If you add latitude and longitude you still have to manually fill in the address details, the street, postcode etc.

Save your entry

Once you save the entry (published) the entry will be listed in the channel view and a pin will appear on the main channel map.
