There’s just one month to go until Woking’s Voluntary Sector Fair, ‘Working Together for Woking’, returns to Woking Leisure Centre (Thursday 7 November 2024), bringing together more than 80 voluntary groups and organisations.

The event is the largest local voluntary sector networking opportunity of its kind, inviting groups to connect and strengthen the range of support on offer to Woking residents.

In June 2023, the council asked its incoming auditor, Grant Thornton UK LLP, to conduct an independent Value for Money review into governance arrangements that relate to historic investment decisions; how these risks were assessed and managed; and how those decisions were scrutinised.

Grant Thornton has informed us that publication of their report is likely to be made during October 2024.

Despite the showery weekend weather, the Seymours Woking Car Show was busier than ever, driving thousands of visitors into Woking town centre.

The wet start did little to dampen the enthusiasm of local exhibitors who together formed a diverse and interesting showcase of over 60 Classic, American and Custom cars spread across the town. 

Mercia Walk housed an impressive display of colourful supercars including four McLaren series cars, a Ferrari F12, Porsche Spider and an Audi R8.

From Monday 16 September, we will be contacting residents registered on the electoral register who have previously supplied their email address to us. 

This activity forms part of our ‘annual canvass’ which is conducted each year to ensure that the electoral register is up-to-date and to identify any residents who are not yet registered to vote.

A new home installation service to support elderly and disabled residents in the borough use smart technology has been launched. 

‘Careline Plus’ is a smart technology home installation service aimed at promoting digital inclusion and helping residents live independently in their own homes. 

A strategy aimed at reducing the borough’s carbon footprint, enhancing resilience to climate impacts, and promoting sustainable development, will be considered by councillors during Thursday’s Executive meeting (12 September).

The Woking Climate Change Strategy sets out net zero ambitions alongside guidance designed to engage with residents and businesses. It will replace the current Woking 2050 climate change strategy.

Woking Borough Council has been awarded £875,000 from the Local Authority Housing Fund (LAHF) to bring long-term empty homes back into use. 
 
The LAHF provides capital funding directly to local authorities to deliver much needed temporary accommodation by 2026.  
 
The fund aims to support councils in addressing the immediate needs of homeless families and Afghan arrivals and in the longer-term, will create a lasting legacy for UK nationals by building up a sustainable stock of affordable housing for local communities. 
 

The Seymours Woking Car Show will be taking place on Sunday 22 September 2024, between 11am and 4pm, across Woking Town Centre.  

This one-day event is free to attend and funded by sponsorship from Seymours Woking, McLaren Automotive, Doubletree by Hilton Woking and Crane Garden Buildings. The event is supported and managed by Woking Borough Council.   

Local residents are being encouraged to actively participate in local government by submitting their questions on important matters to public council meetings.

Residents can raise questions and concerns about issues that affect their local communities. Whether it’s about new policies, local developments or borough council services, residents’ views are invaluable in shaping the future of our borough.

It was with great sadness that we learnt of the death of past Mayor of Woking and former Conservative councillor, Anthony M Allenby.

Mr Allenby passed away on 1 August aged 92.

Mr Allenby became Mayor of Woking in 1977 and served four terms as a councillor between 1966 and 1983. He represented West Byfleet and Pyrford on Woking Urban District Council, before representing Pyrford on Woking Borough Council.

He also took an active role in the day-to-day running of the council, serving on the Finance, Health & Housing and General Services committees.

West Byfleet Recreation Ground tennis courts have reopened, following £117,000 investment by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding collected by Woking Borough Council.

Over the past few months, the courts have undergone extensive transformation works including resurfacing, repainting, new fencing, nets, and a gate system, helping ensure that quality facilities are available for the local community.
