Council services are resuming following a number of technical issues that have impacted the way we respond to resident and business enquiries.

We are currently dealing with a high volume of enquiries and we continue to ask that you to bear with us whilst we deal with this backlog. In particular, processing Council Tax and Housing Benefits claims is currently taking up to four weeks.

Woking Borough Council is encouraging residents who are unable to vote in person at polling stations to apply for a postal or proxy vote (a trusted person) ahead of the forthcoming elections.

Councillors will determine the future of Brockhill extra care housing scheme during a meeting of the council’s Executive on Thursday 13 June.

The building requires urgent fire safety remedial works and a heating upgrade, which combined, is estimated to cost £2.75m.

Capital investment required to maintain the building over the next 10 years is expected to exceed £5.8m which is unviable and a disproportionate level of investment for a building that no longer meets modern day standards.

The deadline for local residents to register to vote in the upcoming general election is Tuesday 18 June. 

On Thursday 4 July, registered voters will be able to elect a Woking’s MP in the general election.

This Volunteers’ Week (3 to 7 June), Woking Borough Council is urging committed residents to support refugee families integrate into life in Woking.

With over 500 Syrian, Ukrainian and Afghan refugees resettling in Woking since 2015, it has been a huge adjustment for these families who have found themselves fleeing conflicts in their home countries.

Volunteers play a critical role in helping refugees overcome a number of challenges and integrate into their new communities, offering a warm welcome and imparting basic skills that are essential to day-to-day life in the UK.

Exceptional members of Woking’s community celebrated their achievements at the annual Mayor Making ceremony last night (Monday 20 May), hosted by the outgoing Mayor of Woking, Cllr M Ilyas Raja.

The event recognises the dedication of Woking residents during the past mayoral year who have demonstrated exemplary behaviours and had a significant impact on the lives of others.

Eminent Citizen

Each year, the outgoing Mayor selects a resident who has provided an ‘eminent service’ to the community and appoints them Eminent Citizen.

Cllr Louise Morales has been elected Mayor of Woking at the official Mayor Making ceremony held yesterday evening (Monday 20 May) in the Council Chamber. 

After a year as Woking’s Deputy Mayor, Louise is excited for the role, and “looking forward to celebrating cultural diversity and learning new things about the Woking community.”

Born in Bristol and moving to Woking in 1996, Louise has always been an avid gardener and botanist. She studied Botany at the University of Manchester and made her way to Woking via a job in a local plant nursery.

Woking Borough Council has successfully prosecuted Okra Lounge Ltd, located at Station Approach in West Byfleet, for endangering the lives of residents. 

On Monday 29 April 2024, Mr Ilhan Coban, one of the directors of Okra Lounge Ltd, pleaded guilty for breaching health and safety legislation at Guildford Magistrates’ Court.

Woking Borough Council is proud to support National Hoarding Awareness Week taking place from Monday 13 May to Friday 17 May.

Hoarding is a recognised mental health disorder, where someone acquires an excessive number of items and stores them in a chaotic manner, usually resulting in unmanageable amounts of clutter. The items can be of little or no monetary value.

Refurbishment work to the tennis courts is set to get underway at West Byfleet Recreation Ground, following partnership investment from the UK Government, Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Tennis Foundation and Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding.

Two tennis courts will be renovated, with investment of over £117,000 helping ensure that quality facilities are available for the local community.
