On Sunday 22 September 2024, Woking Town Centre will once again be lined with Classic, Custom and American cars for visitors to browse at their leisure. 

The Woking Car Show is the borough’s biggest showcase of locally owned, built and lovingly restored automobiles, and is free to both visitors and exhibitors to attend. 
 
The Woking Car Show, which made a welcome return in 2023, is organised by Terry Fox, a Horsell resident and the proud owner of a 1950 Chevrolet pick-up.  

Woking Borough Council’s draft statement of accounts for the financial years 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22 have been prepared and were presented to councillors at a specially convened meeting of the Audit and Governance Committee (Monday 29 July 2024).

The purpose of the statement of accounts is to give electors, local taxpayers, members of the council and other interested parties information about the council’s finances.

Since 2015, over 300 refugees have resettled in Woking, fleeing conflict in their home countries and seeking refuge.

Among those is the Shafaee family, who resettled in Woking in 2021, after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan and turned their lives upside down.

The family, like many others, lost all their assets leaving them without any money or source of income, as well as the relationships that they had built in Afghanistan when forced to flee the country.

Woking Borough Council is seeking an Independent Co-Opted Member and a Chair to serve on its Audit and Governance Committee. 

The committee is responsible for overseeing internal and external audit arrangements, reviewing and scrutinising financial statements, and reviewing and assessing the risk management of the authority.

A vulnerable St John’s resident living with dementia has avoided a serious house fire thanks to the assistance from their Careline alarm.

In the early hours of the morning, an electrical fault caused a kettle to boil dry and begin to melt, despite being turned off at the socket. Luckily, the resident’s Careline system was connected to their fire alarm and the 24-hour telecare staff were then able to send the fire service to their property. The fire service stated that it was only a matter of time before a housefire started.

Investing in renewable energy generation cuts carbon emissions and with a community led initiative, you can install solar panels for less than before. Purchasing solar panels is a cost-effective way to produce clean energy and help cut down on your monthly gas and electricity bills.

Local voluntary and community groups have until the end of the month to express an interest in taking over the running of the council’s community assets.

The process allows the council to transfer its community centres and sports pavilions to voluntary and community groups to run them for the benefit for local residents.

Organisations have until Wednesday 31 July 2024 to express their interest.

Woking’s Brookwood Cemetery has once again received Green Flag Award status in recognition of the way the green space is managed for the enjoyment of visitors.

The award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard across the UK and beyond.

A summit to discuss food insecurities and improving access to food aid was held at The Lighthouse earlier this year in support of vulnerable residents.

Organised by Woking Borough Council, the first food aid summit brought together over 30 representatives from more than 15 organisations that all share the same goal, yet were largely unknown to each other.

The collaborative event heard from various speakers on the need to work together and how the strengthening of a shared network would help bolster the ability to provide food aid for residents in need.

Liberal Democrats candidate, Will Forster, has been elected a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Woking Borough Constituency.

With only one week to go, Woking residents are being urged to get ‘vote ready’ ahead of the upcoming general election on Thursday 4 July 2024.

The general election will give registered voters the chance to elect a Member of Parliament for Woking.

Voting in person

Residents voting in person will have already received their poll cards through the post. It contains details of their designated polling station. Please check carefully before heading out to vote in case the polling station has changed. Polling stations are open from 7am until 10pm.

Woking Borough Council joined hundreds of other councils across the UK, from Aberdeen to the Scilly Isles, Lowestoft to the Isle of Man, in raising the unique flag, based on the Union Jack, in support of Britain’s Armed Forces.
