Following a question from a member of the public during a meeting of Council on Thursday 24 July, the Leader of Woking Borough Council has written to Surrey Local Government Pension Fund to raise ethical concerns about its investment strategy.

The new contract, which will come into effect in June 2027, will replace the current joint contract with Amey LG Limited. 

The procurement is being managed by Joint Waste Solutions (JWS) on behalf of Elmbridge, Mole Valley, Surrey Heath and Woking councils. Street cleaning will remain outside the scope of Woking Borough Council’s contract.

This marks the fifth time the cemetery has received this important accolade.

The working cemetery, which opened in 1854, is one of 2,250 in the UK to achieve the award – the quality mark for parks and green spaces.

The award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces.

The building is managed by the Maybury Centre Trust who are responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of the building under a hire agreement with the council

On Thursday 24 July, the Trust’s energy provider terminated the building’s electricity supply. As a result of the disconnection, the centre is now without power, meaning essential safety systems, such as a working fire alarm, are not operational.

In the interest of public safety, the centre will remain closed whilst the situation is resolved and will be unable to honour upcoming bookings.

Residents, businesses, community groups and stakeholders are invited to a special engagement event on Wednesday 23 July 2025 at Trinity Methodist Church on what the proposed changes to local government in Surrey could mean for you in the future.

Senior councillors and officers from the council will explain what the reorganisation means, set out the different options being considered and show how you can get involved and have your say.

There will also be a Q&A session to raise concerns, ask questions and find out what the proposals could mean for you.  

Surrey County Council is developing a central scheme that will be available later in the year. The scheme will make some HSF funds available to residents that meet certain eligibility criteria.

A public consultation has launched to gather feedback on whether the deadline for wheelchair accessible taxis and private hire vehicles to meet ultra-low emissions standards by 31 March 2026 should remain in place or be extended.

There are concerns about the availability and affordability of suitable wheelchair accessible ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs), as well as the infrastructure needed to support them.

He was first elected in 1971 as ward councillor for Old Woking, Mayford and Sutton, under the old Urban District Council. From 1974 to 1984, he was then elected to represent Kingfield and Westfield for Woking Borough Council.

Mr Greenwood became Mayor of Woking in 1979, a position he was proud to hold.

He took an active role in the day-to-day running of the council, serving on many committees including the Policy, General Services and Recreation, Personnel, Finance, Highways and Leisure Committees.

The council has joined hundreds of other local authorities across the UK in raising the unique Armed Forces Day flag, based on the Union Jack, in support of the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community.

The proposed Additional Licensing Scheme would apply to small Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) - properties where three or more people from two or more households share facilities such as kitchens and bathrooms.

The government has today (Tuesday 17 June) reiterated its commitment to provide financial support to help reduce Woking Borough Council’s historic debt ahead of any reorganisation of local government in Surrey.

This marks the most significant change to local government in the county in over 50 years, giving residents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape how decisions are made, services are delivered and communities are represented.
