Maybury Centre to reopen after temporary closure
The Maybury Centre will reopen to visitors and hirers later in October, following its temporary closure in July due to serious electrical safety concerns.
The centre, at the time managed by the Maybury Centre Trust, had its electricity supply terminated and the meter removed, leaving the centre without power. As a result, essential safety systems were no longer working and the site was closed in the interests of public safety.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the gas meter had also been removed.
As a result, Woking Borough Council has assumed operational management of the Maybury Centre. The Trust will no longer be involved in the management of the site.
Cllr Steve Greentree, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community, said:
I am pleased to confirm that the Maybury Centre will reopen to visitors, community groups and other hirers under the council’s management in October.
Both electricity and gas meters ave been reinstated and power restored to the building. Before reopening the centre, a number of health and safety checks will need to be undertaken to ensure it is safe and ready to welcome users.
As part of a phased reopening, the centre will initially operate with an adjusted timetable. To thank all our regular users for their patience and understanding during the temporary closure, booking fees will remain unchanged until April 2026.
We’ll continue to provide weekly updates to regular users and we look forward to welcoming residents and groups back to this valued community asset.
The council plans to include the Maybury Centre in the Community Asset Transfer process in early 2026, providing local organisations with the opportunity to express an interest in managing and developing the centre.
In the meantime, with good transport links and convenient on-site parking, the Maybury Centre offers a range of accessible rooms and facilities that are ideal for community activities, meetings, workshops and celebrations.
