Responding to a public question on the Palestinian conflict, the Leader of Woking Borough Council, Cllr Ann-Marie Barker, made the following statement to Council on Thursday 24 July 2025.

Woking Borough Council is appalled by the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

The scale of suffering, with tens of thousands of innocent lives lost, widespread displacement, and severe shortages of food, water and medical aid, is deeply distressing.

These are human tragedies that transcend politics, and we unequivocally condemn the barbaric acts that have led to such devastation.

As a local authority, we are not responsible for foreign policy, nor do we control the Surrey Pension Fund.

However, we can, and we will, add our voice to the many calling for an immediate ceasefire, full compliance with international humanitarian law, and urgent access to aid for all civilians.

We support all efforts that aim to achieve a peaceful, sustainable and just resolution to the conflict.

We have heard, directly, the strength of feeling in our community. Woking is home to people of many faiths and backgrounds, including those directly affected by the violence. We acknowledge and respect the efforts of residents to advocate for peace and to support humanitarian relief.

In response to this question, I will write to the Surrey Pension Fund, conveying the concerns raised and asking them to consider their responsibilities under Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles.

In the spirit of Woking’s longstanding commitment to mutual respect and interfaith friendship, we urge all residents to stand together in compassion and solidarity, and to reject hatred in all its forms.

The Council’s support for Ukraine in 2022 formed part of a nationally coordinated response, led by the UK Government and the Local Government Association, which included refugee resettlement.

Whilst there is no such national framework, we do recognise the deep concern within our community and seek to reflect those voices with care and respect.
