Register for council housing
What the housing register is, who can apply, how to apply, appeal a decision, how housing is allocated.
How council housing is allocated
If you're application is successful, you will be added to the housing register.
You can express your preference for an area and type of housing. Your preferences will be taken into account when allocating council housing.
You can also bid for properties on the housing register, which includes council-owned and housing association properties. This is called a choice-based letting (CBL) scheme.
When allocating properties, we must make sure we meet legal duties under the following legislation:
- Housing Act 1996 – Legislation.gov.uk
- Homelessness Act 2002 – Legislation.gov.uk
- Localism Act 2011 – Legislation.gov.uk
- Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 – Legislation.gov.uk
