In order to carry out essential highway works, parts of The Broadway and Chertsey Road will be closed overnight on Monday 16 May and Tuesday 17 May 2022.

The closures will allow for highway surface improvements including resetting manhole covers and relaying sand and brick around the covers.

The closure of The Broadway, between Maybury Road and Locke Way, will commence at 11.30pm, Monday 16 May and remain in place until 6am, Tuesday 17 May 2022. It will also restrict access to Duke Street.

A series of events will take place in Woking to mark Dementia Action Week 2022, from 16 to 22 May. The awareness week is run annually by the Alzheimer’s Society, and the theme for 2022 is ‘diagnosis’.

Visitors to the Basingstoke Canal may have noticed a few changes to the area in recent weeks after Woking’s Safer Neighbourhood team joined forces with the local community to improve feelings of safety in the area.

The 13-mile stretch of canal running through the borough, a much-loved local beauty spot popular with dog walkers, cyclists and joggers, has been cleared of overgrown shrubbery and has seen the installation of new CCTV cameras which cover the towpath.

Outstanding members of Woking’s community celebrated their achievements at the Mayor’s Civic Reception on Friday 29 April 2022.

The event, which recognises the dedication of Woking residents, was held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Woking, where the Mayor of Woking, Cllr Liam Lyons, announced Woking’s Eminent Citizen for 2022 and the winners of this year’s Young People’s Civic Award Scheme.

Residents risk missing out on free support from the Priority Services Register in electricity emergencies, according to data from UK Power Networks.

In the south east, Woking is one of the most under-represented areas with only 55% of eligible households registered. Those most likely to miss out include families with children under five, households who cannot communicate easily in English, those of pensionable age and people with mental health conditions.

To mark 170 years since its establishment, Brookwood Cemetery will host a celebratory event with walking tours of the cemetery on Surrey Day, Saturday 7 May 2022.

The event will feature information displays and members of the Brookwood Cemetery Society will be available to answer questions about the cemetery and help locate graves on the site.

Guided walks of the site will include an introduction to the cemetery and a look inside some of the mausoleums and at the beautiful wildlife.

The event will also mark 30 years of the Brookwood Cemetery Society.

With under two weeks left until Woking residents go to the polls, Woking Borough Council is urging voters to get ready for the upcoming local elections on Thursday 5 May 2022.

Local elections give residents the opportunity to vote for Woking Borough councillors who decide on services at a local level, such as planning, housing, parks and green spaces, leisure and community centres, recycling and waste collections and more.

Grant Thornton has been appointed Administrators over Peacocks Centre, and Moyallen Woking Limited, the two companies which own and operate the Peacocks Shopping Centre in Woking. The appointments also include two other related companies which own shopping centres in Northern Ireland.

Julie Fisher, Woking Borough Council’s Chief Executive, said: “Moyallen’s property companies, which include Peacocks Centre, and Moyallen Woking Ltd, the owner of the Primark lease in the Peacocks Centre, have been put into administration.

“Moyallen Developments Ltd, the company managing the Victoria Place development, is unaffected, as is the Victoria Square Woking Limited joint venture company with the Council.

The demolition works to clear the existing Triangle site within Woking town will recommence on Wednesday 20 April 2022, subject to pre-works surveys. The demolition is expected to last for 12 weeks. 
 
The Triangle site is the pocket of land surrounded by the one-way system incorporating Guildford Road, Victoria Road and Station Approach.
