Residents are being urged to check if they or someone they know can join UK Power Networks’ Priority Services Register.

Residents risk missing out on free support from the Priority Services Register in electricity emergencies, according to data from UK Power Networks.

In the south east, Woking is one of the most under-represented areas with only 55% of eligible households registered. Those most likely to miss out include families with children under five, households who cannot communicate easily in English, those of pensionable age and people with mental health conditions.

To mark 170 years since its establishment, Brookwood Cemetery will host a celebratory event with walking tours of the cemetery on Surrey Day, Saturday 7 May 2022.

The event will feature information displays and members of the Brookwood Cemetery Society will be available to answer questions about the cemetery and help locate graves on the site.

Guided walks of the site will include an introduction to the cemetery and a look inside some of the mausoleums and at the beautiful wildlife.

The event will also mark 30 years of the Brookwood Cemetery Society.

With under two weeks left until Woking residents go to the polls, Woking Borough Council is urging voters to get ready for the upcoming local elections on Thursday 5 May 2022.

Local elections give residents the opportunity to vote for Woking Borough councillors who decide on services at a local level, such as planning, housing, parks and green spaces, leisure and community centres, recycling and waste collections and more.

Grant Thornton has been appointed Administrators over Peacocks Centre, and Moyallen Woking Limited, the two companies which own and operate the Peacocks Shopping Centre in Woking. The appointments also include two other related companies which own shopping centres in Northern Ireland.

Julie Fisher, Woking Borough Council’s Chief Executive, said: “Moyallen’s property companies, which include Peacocks Centre, and Moyallen Woking Ltd, the owner of the Primark lease in the Peacocks Centre, have been put into administration.

“Moyallen Developments Ltd, the company managing the Victoria Place development, is unaffected, as is the Victoria Square Woking Limited joint venture company with the Council.

The demolition works to clear the existing Triangle site within Woking town will recommence on Wednesday 20 April 2022, subject to pre-works surveys. The demolition is expected to last for 12 weeks. 
 
The Triangle site is the pocket of land surrounded by the one-way system incorporating Guildford Road, Victoria Road and Station Approach.

An Honorary Freedom of the Borough Parade for The Army Training Centre (Pirbright) will take place in Woking town centre on Sunday 24 April 2022.

Troops from the Centre will march into Jubilee Square for an open-air ceremony, after which the parade will march past Deputy Lieutenant, Major General Tim Sulivan, CB, CBE, and the Mayor of Woking, Cllr Liam Lyons.

The Freedom of the Borough is the highest award that a borough can bestow, recognising exceptional contributions or distinctive service by an individual or group of individuals.

Time is running out for local residents to register to vote at the forthcoming local borough elections taking place on Thursday 5 May 2022.

In order to vote in May, residents must be on the electoral register. With the deadline to register to vote fast approaching, Woking Borough Council is urging people who are not registered at their current address to make sure they are registered in time.

The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Thursday 14 April. It takes just five minutes to apply online.

Following a two-year closure due to the pandemic, Brockhill Extra Care sheltered accommodation will open its community day centre next week – and everyone is welcome!

Visits to Brockhill had previously been limited to guests of tenants only in the interest of public safety, but activities will resume from Monday 4 April 2022 as everyone is welcomed back.

In celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee later this year, Woking Borough Council has partnered with the Clink Charity based at HMP Send’s Fruit Tree Project to distribute 500 fruit trees to local organisations and community groups to commemorate this historic occasion.

Pear, apple, plum and cherry trees were distributed to groups and organisations including Woking College, The Lightbox, local schools and faith groups.

Refugee families, charities and a limited number of residents were also among those receiving a fruit tree.
