In response to the announcement that Greenfield School and Hoe Bridge School will merge, Woking Borough Council has issued the following statement regarding the outstanding loan owed to the council by Greenfield School.

Cllr Dale Roberts, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Finance and Economy, said: “Whilst I welcome the planned merger between Greenfield and Hoe Bridge schools, we have been clear that all existing contractual obligations, including the repayment of outstanding loans to Greenfield School, must be honoured in full.

Local voluntary and community groups are being invited to express their interest in taking on the management of West Byfleet Pavilion, helping to safeguard the valued community space for future generations.

Located in the heart of West Byfleet Recreation Ground, the pavilion offers flexible indoor space suitable for a variety of community uses, alongside access to outdoor sports pitches and green space.

Today (Friday 9 May), district and borough councils in Surrey have submitted proposals to government outlining their vision for the future of local government in Surrey. 

Nine district and borough councils support the formation of three unitary councils (Epsom & Ewell, Guildford, Reigate & Banstead, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, Tandridge, Waverley and Woking) while two district and borough councils (Elmbridge and Mole Valley) and the county council favour two. Both proposals are published on council websites. 

A proposal that would see the creation of three unitary councils across Surrey was approved by the Executive during last night’s extraordinary meeting (Thursday 8 May). The proposal will now be submitted to government.

During the meeting, as part of the consideration of the final option for submission, the Executive considered representations made by councillors during an extraordinary meeting of Council held earlier the same evening.

As the nation prepares to mark VE Day on Thursday 8 May, the Mayor of Woking took the opportunity this week to meet with local veteran Ronald Chapman to hear his wartime memories and honour his and a generation’s service.

Born and raised in Woking, Ronald, aged 101, went to school in Knaphill and first joined West Surrey's, Queens Regiment the day before his eighteenth birthday in 1943.

The government has confirmed its intention to provide financial support to aid the reduction of Woking Borough Council’s debt ahead of the proposed reorganisation of local government in Surrey, according to a council report published today (Tuesday 29 April 2025).

Woking town centre will mark VE Day on Monday 5 May.

To mark the occasion, several vintage military vehicles will be on display in Mercia Walk, offering visitors a glimpse into wartime history, whilst in Jubilee Square, seating and tables will be available for residents and visitors to pause, reflect and relax.

A special commemorative VE Day flag will also fly proudly from the Civic Offices as a mark of respect to those who gave so much.

An update from Cllr Ann-Marie Barker, Leader of Woking Borough Council, on the reopening of Victoria Way (A320).

“I’m pleased to announce that Victoria Way will reopen to traffic by 10pm this evening (Friday 25 April).

“I want to sincerely apologise for all the disruption this closure has caused. I know it’s been incredibly frustrating for residents, businesses and everyone travelling through Woking. It’s not a situation any of us wanted, and I’m relieved that we can now look forward to free-flowing traffic through this key route once again.

A new self-referral form has been launched to help Woking residents connect with local services and take greater control of their health and wellbeing through the council’s Social Prescribing service.

Social Prescribing aims to link residents, who have social, emotional or practical needs which cannot be addressed by a GP, to a wealth of different services within the borough.
