Route A: confirm your identify using supporting documents

There are two routes to confirm your identity: route A, if you have supporting documents; and route B, if you don’t have any documents.

In order to process your application for an elector card, you will need to supply proof of name and proof of address. Examples of accepted proofs are listed below.

Apply for a local elector card using route A

We do not require original copies of documents; photocopies or digital copies are acceptable. If you cannot provide any of these documents, please use route B.

Please provide us with:

  • two proofs of name (type 1)
  • one proofs of address (type 2)

or

  • one proof of name (type 1)
  • two proofs of address (type 2)

If you cannot provide any of proof of name evidence (type 1), please provide us with four documents from the proofs of address (type 2) list.

Type 1: proof of name

  • UK paper driving licence
  • Non EU photo driving licence
  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate
  • Adoption certificate
  • Police bail sheet
  • Firearms licence
  • Student identity card
  • National Insurance Card or letter
  • Valid bank or building society debit card or credit card
  • Bank or building society cheque book or pass book

Type 2: proof of address

  • Mortgage statement, no older than 12 months
  • Bank or building society statement, no older than three months
  • Credit card statement, no older than three months
  • Pension statement, no older than 12 months
  • Council Tax statement, no older than 12 months
  • Utility bill, no older than three months (excluding mobile phone bills)
  • P45 or P60 statement, no older than 12 months
  • Benefit statement, eg child benefit, pension, no older than three months
  • Entitlement document from central or local government, government agency or local council, no older than three months, eg DWP, Job Centre Plus, HMRC
  • Any other financial statement, no older than 12 months
  • Poll card for the election
