The government has today (Tuesday 17 June) reiterated its commitment to provide financial support to help reduce Woking Borough Council’s historic debt ahead of any reorganisation of local government in Surrey.

In a letter to council leaders in Surrey launching a statutory consultation on two proposals for unitary local government in the county, the Minister of State for Local Government and English Devolution, Jim McMahon, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to financial assistance in advance of any reorganisation.

This commitment ensures that both the council and its successor authority will be equipped to manage the financial challenges ahead and deliver sustainable services for residents.

Responding to the letter, Cllr Dale Roberts, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Finance and Economy, said: "We welcome the government’s renewed commitment to future financial support as outlined in the Minister’s letter.

“It represents an important step towards addressing our historic debt position as part of wider discussions on the future structure of local government in Surrey.

"Whilst there is much still to be agreed, this announcement provides reassurance as we continue to work closely with government and other Surrey councils to secure a sustainable financial future for Woking and the best possible outcomes for residents.

“We remain fully committed to delivering our Improvement and Recovery Plan, ensuring that Woking is in the strongest possible position ahead of any future changes.”
