Woking endorses three unitary council approach to local government reorganisation in Surrey

A proposal that would see the creation of three unitary councils across Surrey was approved by the Executive during last night’s extraordinary meeting (Thursday 8 May). The proposal will now be submitted to government.

During the meeting, as part of the consideration of the final option for submission, the Executive considered representations made by councillors during an extraordinary meeting of Council held earlier the same evening.

The three unitary council model aims to deliver more responsive, efficient and locally focused services by replacing the current two-tier system of local government in Surrey with a new structure that combines county, district and borough services within single organisations.

Under the proposed structure, Woking would form part of a new unitary council area alongside Guildford, Surrey Heath and Waverley.

Cllr Ann-Marie Barker, Leader of Woking Borough Council, said: “Having carefully considered the proposals and the feedback received, we believe the three unitary council model offers the best opportunity to deliver efficient, effective and locally focused services for our residents.

“By bringing together county, district and borough responsibilities within a single organisation for our area, we can retain a strong local voice while working together to improve services, support economic growth and deliver better value for money for our communities and local businesses.

“We recognise that significant change lies ahead, but our priority remains ensuring the best possible outcomes for our residents.

“We will continue to work closely with our communities, partners and other councils throughout this process to shape a positive, prosperous future for Woking and for Surrey.”

Surrey County Council and several other district and borough councils have put forward an alternative for two unitary councils, while a single unitary council was ruled out in February.

The three unitary council proposal will be submitted today (Friday 9 May), with the government expected to make its decision in the autumn.
