The bar was raised last week when The Slug & Lettuce in Woking Town Centre became the first licensed premises, on this year's Best Bar None scheme, to receive gold accreditation.

Spencer Varley, the premises manager, and his team, met all the essential and desirable criteria that achieves a gold level accreditation. The on-the-spot assessment, carried out by two Best Bar None assessors, showed high standards in:

  • prevention of crime and disorder

  • public safety

  • prevention of public nuisance

  • child protection

  • social responsibility

  • training for staff covering these areas.

Cllr Debbie Harlow, Chair of Woking Borough Council 's Licensing Committee, said: "I am very pleased to present Spencer and his team with the first 2018 gold accreditation for Best Bar None. As a former publican myself, I know how hard it is to maintain high standards in all the areas at all times, when running a licensed premises. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to ensure customers can enjoy themselves in a safe and responsible drinking establishment. The Slug & Lettuce Team are a credit to Woking and its night economy. Well done!"

Spencer Varley, Manager of Slug & Lettuce Woking, said: "The gold accreditation shows that people can come to a safe, fun and friendly venue for their evening out. The accreditation is a great acknowledgement of the team, who work exceptionally hard to deliver these high standards everyday. I'm proud of them. Thank you to my team, head office and our customers."

Lucy Chester, Woking Street Angels, added: "It's great to have the scheme in Woking. Working in partnership with the licensed premises, Surrey Police and the Council shows responsibility to the public. "
