Team Woking celebrated a triumphant victory after walking away with the Specsavers Surrey Youth Games Overall Medal Table Winner’s trophy at the Surrey Sports Awards 2018, organised by Active Surrey and held on Monday 3 December at Brooklands Hotel, near Woking.

Earlier in the year, over 150 young athletes from across the Borough, aged between seven and 16 years old, represented Woking in a county-wide series of tournaments comprising of 11 different sports including badminton, boccia, boxing, football, hockey, judo, lacrosse, netball, touch rugby, squash and mini tennis. Participants ran away with one Bronze, two Silver and seven Gold medals for Woking.

Cllr Colin Kemp, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “Many weeks of training goes into these games and this achievement is a fantastic reflection of both the sporting talent that we have in the Borough as well as the enthusiasm and dedication of the many local coaches and volunteers who worked hard to help put Woking at the top of the medal table.

“The purpose of the Specsavers Surrey Youth Games is to give young people who would not normally participate in sport the chance to learn, play and compete in an activity that is totally new to them. We are thrilled that the outstanding efforts of all of the new young sportspeople have been recognised by this trophy.”

Ahead of the 2019 Specsavers Surrey Youth Games, Team Woking is looking for enthusiastic young sport champions to help inspire young people to participate in the Games programme.
