Not long until Living Well Week gets underway

Date:

Monday, 24 September, 2018

There is limited time left to sign up to many of the events and taster sessions being run as part of Living Well Week, from Monday 8 to Friday 12 October 2018. The week-long programme of events aims to encourage older people to improve their health and wellbeing and sustain a healthier lifestyle after the week is over and into the future.

Throughout the week, residents will have the chance to gather advice, receive introductory offers and take advantage of free taster sessions and workshops at leisure facilities across the Borough.

This year there is an increased focus on mental health throughout the week with lots of outdoor activities that will help people reconnect with nature. A volunteer work party on Millmoor Common on Wednesday 10 October from 10am to 1pm will allow residents to immerse themselves in the great outdoors and get some great exercise whilst making our green spaces more welcoming for everyone. Two guided walks on Thursday 11 October and Friday 12 October provide fresh air and education as experts take walkers on a gentle stroll around some of Woking’s iconic landmarks.

The spotlight is also being put on dementia services available across the Borough and providing advice on how to help loved ones with the condition. Diary highlights include a Dementia Friends Session (Monday 8 October) as well as a Dementia Friendly activity afternoon (Thursday 11 October), both taking place at the Triangle Day Centre.

Francesca Simpson, Manager at Friends of the Elderly’s day care service in Woking, said: “Living Well Week gives us the opportunity to open our doors to the community so that they can experience and enjoy the services and activities we offer in Woking. Friends of the Elderly and our sister organisation, Triangle Community Services, are delighted to work with Woking Borough Council for another enjoyable wellness week, and look forward to welcoming everyone. We have a dementia education session on Monday, a Ploughman’s and Pimms afternoon on Tuesday and dementia friendly activities on Thursday.”

Talking about the activities on offer, Cllr Beryl Hunwicks, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Living Well Week is growing in popularity as more people come to understand the positive effects that regular exercise, healthy eating and good mental health can have on our overall wellbeing. The Borough offers a wealth of activities all designed to help people achieve their individual living well aims and Living Well Week is the perfect opportunity to discover all of the great classes and services available.

“Time is running out to sign up to some of the activities as space is limited on many. So I really recommend finding something that interests you and getting it in the diary. It will give you the perfect chance for some ‘me’ time and perhaps you will find something that you love to do, which also helps to keep you active.”
