Have your say on plans to upgrade Goldworth Park’s cycle track

A consultation has been launched for residents, keen cyclists, and users of Goldsworth Park Lake and Recreation Ground to comment on plans to refurbish the cycle track.

This upgrade follows Woking Borough Council’s successful bid to British Cycling to secure £60,000 in funding to invest in reforming the existing track, located by the lake in Goldsworth Park. The council is match funding an additional £60,000.

The cycle track, currently formed of various dirt tracks over mounds, is used by a combination of recreational riders and formal coaches. The funding will allow the council to improve the quality of the facility, whilst retaining open access and free use.

The refurbishment plan would see the delivery of a hybrid facility providing:

  • a fully asphalted pump track which is a circuit of small mounds to help cyclists generate momentum,
  • an all-weather mountain bike circuit, and
  • a grass track circuit with features to support the existing coaching which local clubs already deliver.

Cllr Colin Kemp, Portfolio Holder for Cultural and Community Development, said: “It’s fantastic news that we’ve received this funding to enable us to refurbish such a great community asset. The council remains committed to improving the health and wellbeing of all residents and the refurbishment of the cycle track will enable more children and young people to exercise and have fun.

“For example, it will become a dedicated cycling facility for local cycling clubs and schools to teach children aged three plus, to ride, as well as providing a venue for cyclists of all abilities to use all year round.

“Sustainable development and improving our green infrastructure are also key priorities. It is important to note that the scheme has been designed to limit the impact on existing grassland habitat and protect the existing trees which will be retained.”

Plans are also in place to ensure that the relevant signage will be provided for the area which will help the public identify the new track and avoid any crossovers with our other park users.
