Construction site noise control

We can impose conditions on how work is carried out on a construction site in order to limit the noise impact on anyone who lives nearby.

In the first instance, a voluntary agreement is usually reached with the site operator on the times during which a construction site is allowed to operate noisy equipment.

These times are normally:

  • Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm
  • Saturday, 8am to 1pm
  • Sunday and Bank Holidays, not including the use of noisy equipment.

If an operator fails to follow the agreed times, we may use our powers under the Control of Pollution Act 1974 to enforce the restrictions. Failure to comply can lead to prosecution and a fine of up to £20,000.
