Patterns
Content design patterns, including making content stand out, external linking, starting an online form, downloading a document and more.
Buttons
There are two different types of buttons.
Green start now buttons
Find out how GOV.UK use green start now buttons
Use a green start now button when you are linking straight to a form or online service that allows the user to complete their task.
When linking to form, make sure you include text explaining above the button what the user can do.
Example – internal form
You can apply online for a single occupier discount.
If the link takes the user to an external site, also include where the link is directing them.
For example – external form
You can apply for [service] on GOV.UK.
Always use ‘Start now’ unless it is a payment action, then use ‘Pay now’.
If the main call to action is contact the council, use ‘Contact us’.
Green start now buttons – multiple actions on the page
Try not to use too many green CTA buttons on one page. If you need to use more than 1, add a short explanation to each button.
Start with a verb and name the action.
Example:
‘Apply for XXXXX’ [CTA button]
‘Report XXXXXX’ [CTA button]

Top task buttons
You can use top task buttons on:
- service landing pages
- service sub-landing pages
- service pages
A top task would be something that is high volume or high user need, for example:
- Pay your Council Tax
- Renew your licence
- Find a car park
Add the link text and then either lookup an internal URL or add an external URL.
Leave the button type as action.
