Regenerate Rise gives new lease of life to St Mary’s Centre for the Community
The future of the much-loved St Mary’s Centre for the Community in Byfleet has been secured, following completion of the Community Asset Transfer (CAT) to local charity, Regenerate Rise.
The CAT scheme enables voluntary and community organisations to lease council-owned buildings, helping to protect valued spaces and deliver services that meet local needs whilst enabling the council to make essential budget savings.
Regenerate Rise Woking, whose lease began on 1 September, has created a welcoming space where individuals and families can gather, connect, and take part in a wide range of activities.
The charity is already operating day services for residents over 60, and collaborates with other local groups to run a range of activities including exercise classes, toddler groups and more.
Regenerate Rise is also currently focusing on revitalising the community café, aiming to restore it as a welcoming and inclusive space for all visitors.
Cllr Steve Greentree, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities, said:
This is a great example of how the Community Asset Transfer programme is enabling local organisations to reinvigorate spaces that serve the community.
Regenerate Rise brings a strong track record of care and connection, and we’re proud to support their vision for St Mary’s. I’m particularly pleased that services supporting elderly and vulnerable residents will continue, offering valuable support to Byfleet communities.
I wish Regenerate Rise the best of luck with their operations.
Debbie Thwaites, Director of Services at Regenerate Rise, added:
We’re delighted to formally manage St Mary’s Centre for the Community and create a shared, inclusive space where everyone can come together to feel valued and supported.
Our aim is to foster a spirit of community and enrich the lives of everyone who steps through our doors. We look forward to welcoming residents to an open day in the near future, please look out for further details.
