Maybury Centre temporarily closed due to electrical safety concerns
Woking Borough Council has taken immediate action to suspend use of the Maybury Centre following serious electrical safety concerns.
The building is managed by the Maybury Centre Trust who are responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of the building under a hire agreement with the council
On Thursday 24 July, the Trust’s energy provider terminated the building’s electricity supply. As a result of the disconnection, the centre is now without power, meaning essential safety systems, such as a working fire alarm, are not operational.
In the interest of public safety, the centre will remain closed whilst the situation is resolved and will be unable to honour upcoming bookings.
Cllr Steve Greentree, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community, said:
It is very regrettable that this situation has arisen, resulting in the temporary loss of a valued community facility.
We recognise the closure will cause disruption for many local groups who use the centre regularly, but the safety of building users and the wider public must always come first.
I would encourage any regular hirers displaced by the temporary closure to contact us and we will do our best to advise on what alternative options may be available. We hope the issues can be resolved swiftly.
Hirers looking for alternative venues should email Centres.Enquiries@woking.gov.uk to see what options may be available.
Further updates will be provided as and when available.
