Repairs responsibilities for tenants and leaseholders

You're responsible for some repairs and maintenance in your council home.

Council tenant repairs

As a council tenant, you're responsible for:

  • damages by a family member or visitor
  • lost keys
  • curtain track batons
  • plugs and chains for sinks, baths and basins
  • draught excludes
  • broken window glass (unless you have a police reference number)
  • cost of sweeping flues and chimneys (unless part of a gas safety check)

Council leaseholder repairs

Most leaseholders are responsible for internal day-to-day repairs that are needed in your property. This is as per the terms of your lease.

We are responsible for any repairs to a building's structure.

If you notice any repairs that are needed in a communal area, you can request that they are repaired. This includes areas such as the stairway, hall or bin stores.

For elderly, disabled or vulnerable people, we operate a handyman service for small jobs around your home, such as putting up shelves or hanging pictures. There may be a small charge for using this service.
