Housing Gas Policy

How we manage gas safety in the council homes and residential buildings that we own and manage.

This policy sets out how we meet our legal responsibilities to keep residents, staff, contractors and visitors safe from gas-related risks, including gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.

The policy covers:

  • gas appliances
  • pipework
  • flues
  • chimneys
  • associated systems in council-managed homes

It explains how we:

  • carry out annual gas safety checks
  • maintain accurate records
  • manage repairs and servicing
  • use qualified Gas Safe registered contractors carry out gas work

It also covers access arrangements for:

  • safety inspections
  • requirements for alterations to properties
  • gas safety checks in empty homes and mutual exchanges
  • management of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • monitoring of contractor performance

The policy provides the framework for ensuring gas systems are safely installed, maintained and inspected across the council’s housing stock.
