Nominations are now open to find Woking’s young stars
The nominations process for the annual Young People’s Civic Awards Scheme 2024 has begun.
The search is now on for local young people who have achieved exceptional success in areas that are not normally recognised by formal accreditation and deserve recognition for their efforts.
Nominees are being sought in the following three categories.
- Outstanding contribution to the community: includes work in areas such as helping the elderly or disabled, working with children, fund raising for good causes and involvement with local voluntary organisations.
- Triumph over adversity: includes endurance and bravery, such as overcoming disability or helping a parent or family member with a disability.
- Outstanding achievement: includes excellence in many fields such as sport, music, drama, the visual arts, but particularly in less academic subjects not normally recognised or rewarded in other ways.
Speaking about the initiative, the Mayor of Woking, Cllr M Ilyas Raja, said: “It is important as a community that we recognise the young people that go above and beyond to help others. This is why the Young People’s Civic Award Scheme is so vital to Woking’s community. If you know a young person who has overcome adversity this year, triumphed against all odds or cared for a parent or loved one with a disability, I encourage you to nominate them. It is a wonderful opportunity to remind people of the goodness in the world.”
The scheme is open to all children and young people, up to the age of 18, who live or attend school or college in the borough. All nominations will be judged by the Mayor of Woking.
Nominees will receive a certificate acknowledging their achievements. The winners will be invited to attend the Annual Council meeting in May 2024.
The deadline for nominations is Friday 23 February 2024.
