Council remembers former Mayor of Woking, Cllr Derek McCrum
14 July 2017
It is with great sadness that Woking Borough Council announces the death of past Mayor of Woking and former Liberal Democrat councillor, Derek McCrum, who passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Friday (14 July 2017) morning.
As a mark of respect, the Borough flag will be flown at half-mast until after the funeral. Derek became the 42nd Mayor of Woking in 2015, serving as Ward Councillor for Kingfield and Westfield for 12 years.
Elected in 2004, Derek took an active role in the day to day running of the Council, serving on the Planning Committee and Overview and Scrutiny Committee. He also had a keen interest in the environment, serving on the Local Agenda 21 Liaison Group and Climate Change Working Group which have both helped shape the Borough in which we live.
Upon hearing the news, Cllr Graham Cundy, Mayor of Woking, said: This is very sad news indeed. Derek was a kind, compassionate and determined man who had a passion for local politics and helping people. During his Mayoral year, Derek worked tirelessly to raise valuable funds for many worthy charities close to his heart. He was a tremendous servant to this Borough and he will be sorely missed by all. On behalf of Woking Borough Council, I would like to pass on my condolences to Rosemary and the McCrum family.
