The much anticipated annual Diwali Lantern Parade returns to Woking town centre next week (Thursday 20 October) in a celebration of new beginnings, good versus evil and the triumph of light over dark.

Meaning the festival of lights, Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains around the world and Woking is home to a colourful parade of its own.

Local residents and visitors are invited to join in the celebrated lantern parade from 6pm, Thursday 20 October in Gloucester Square (outside Woking Civic Offices).

Led by energetic rhythms of live music and drum beats, the parade will tour Woking town centre before finishing in Victoria Square with an exciting finale performed by the Chenda Melam drummers.

Speaking about the upcoming event, Cllr Ellen Nicholson, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Living Well, said: “I am excited to see Woking town centre illuminated in colour once again as residents come together to celebrate Diwali and create lasting memories with loved ones.”

“I encourage anyone who is able to, to come along and attend this joyous community event. No matter what your religious background or beliefs, everyone is welcome to join in the celebrations and reflect upon new beginnings.

The free event is organised by Woking Borough Council in partnership with Sayapatri Nepalese Group; Woking Malayalee Association; Surrey Hindu Cultural Association; The Art of Living; Tamil Association and Surrey Area Teluga Association.

Why not showcase your creativity and make a home-made lantern to bring along to the parade too?
