Let us know so we can update their Council Tax account.

To report that someone has died, you can use the national Tell Us Once service. This informs all government organisations in one go.

Other actions you may need to consider

Below is a list of helpful actions you may need to consider after someone has died.

If someone is still residing in the property

Anyone residing in the property aged over 18 will be liable for paying the Council Tax from the date of death.

If only 1 person is residing in the property, they will receive a 25% discount.

Apply for a single occupier discount

If no-one is residing in the property

If the property remains empty, it may be exempt from Council Tax until

  • 6 months after probate has been granted
  • someone else becomes responsible for the property

An extra discount may be applied if the property remains empty and is unfurnished.

If the property is rented

You will need to let us know when the tenancy ended.

Tell us you're moving home

Council Tax account and bill

If there is a credit on the deceased person's Council Tax account, we will:

  • refund this to their estate
  • transfer it to the new Council Tax account if they had a partner

If there is an outstanding balance on the deceased person's account, the amount will be cleared by payment from the estate.
