Council Tax discounts and exemptions

Council Tax is worked out based on the number of adults, aged over 18 years old, living in a property. Some people are not counted, which is called 'disregarded'.

You can apply online for a discount if you or any adults you live with are not counted for Council Tax.

While we process your application, you must continue paying your Council Tax. We can take action if you do not pay the full amount.

What you'll get

If everyone is disregarded except for 1 person, you'll get a 25% discount.

If everyone is disregarded, you'll get a 50% discount. 

Who can apply

The following people may be disregarded (do not count) when we look at the number of adults who live in your property:

• full time students
• student nurses, apprentices and youth training trainees
• 18 and 19 year olds who are at or have just left school
• prisoners and other people held in detention
• people who are severely mentally impaired
• people living in a hospital
• people looked after in a care or nursing home
• people providing or receiving care elsewhere
• certain care workers and people providing care in the home
• members of religious communities
• members of visiting forces and certain international institutions
• people on the Homes for Ukraine scheme

Even if you're disregarded, you must apply for a discount or exemption.
