Gas safety for council homes
We are responsible for keeping your gas supply safe if there is one in your council home.
If you suspect a gas leak, call the Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately.
Not all council properties have a gas supply to them. If yours does, we will meet our regulatory and statutory responsibilities to keep you safe in your home.
You are responsible for the gas appliances that you own, such as cookers. We are responsible for any boilers, flues and pipework.
What to do in a gas emergency
A gas emergency can be:
- a gas leak
- a carbon monoxide alarm has been activated
- a total failure of gas heating and hot water
You should do as much of the following as you can, if safe to do so:
- Isolate the gas supply immediately using the emergency control valve.
- Ventilate the building by opening doors and windows.
- Extinguish all naked flames, cigarettes, candles, cooking appliances and boilers.
- Make sure nobody in the vicinity smokes or uses electrical switches and sockets (including mobile phones).
- Evacuate the property.
Once away from the property, call the Gas Emergency Service immediately.

Gas safety checks
If your boiler, cooker and gas appliances are not checked on a regular basis, you’re at risk of a gas leak, carbon monoxide poisoning or even an explosion.
We are required by law to:
- check your gas appliances annually
- ensure there is adequate ventilation
- service your boiler and fire detectors
The annual inspection is a requirement and typically takes about an hour. It is vital for your safety and can even help save you money on fuel bills.
You can help us by allowing access to your home. We aim to give you suitable notice, unless there is an emergency and we need urgent access.
If we are due to service your appliances, you will receive a communication from us or our approved gas contractor (Smith & Byford).
