Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) for new developments

Surrey County Council is the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) and a statutory consultee to the planning process for surface water on all major developments.

Where required or when requested, it also advises Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) on surface water flood risk and sustainable drainage systems.

Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are required on all planning applications in England in accordance with the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) – GOV.UK.

Surrey County Council publishes SuDS guidance on:

  • design for major developments
  • design non-major developments
  • pre-application planning advice
  • discharge of Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) standard conditions
