Upcoming elections that you can vote in, including council elections, by-elections and general elections.

We plan and manage all elections in Woking borough. When scheduled to take place, elections usually take place on the first Thursday in May.

West Surrey Council election

The first elections for the new councils – West Surrey Council and East Surrey Council – took place on Thursday 7 May 2026. The new councils will take over the functions of all 11 district and borough councils and Surrey County Council from 1 April 2027.

By-elections

A by-election is usually held to fill a ‘casual vacancy’ which occurs on either the death or resignation of a councillor. An election would not be held if that councillor was due to retire within 6 months.

Parliamentary elections (general elections)

The maximum term of a Parliament is 5 years from the day on which it first met. The last general election took place on Thursday 4 July 2024. 

The next general election is expected in 2029 unless the Prime Minister asks for an earlier date.

The Woking Parliamentary County Constituency is formed only of Woking area.

Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner elections

Woking is part of the Surrey Police area, which was formed with all 11 districts and boroughs in Surrey. 

Police and Crime Commissioners (PCC) were elected every 4 years. The next PCC election will take place in May 2028.

The Police and Crime Commissioner is responsible for setting the strategic objectives for policing in Surrey.

How local elections were run before Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Surrey

Historically, local elections were run as follows. Woking Borough and Surrey Council councillors will remain in post until 31 March 2027.

Borough elections were held in all 10 electoral wards every 3 out of 4 years.
