Guide for new council tenants

There are a few things you need to do when you become a council tenant.

Ending your previous tenancy

If you currently rent your home, you must tell your landlord that you want to end your tenancy.

You will usually need to give written notice. This is normally at least 4 weeks or one calendar month. Check your tenancy agreement to find out what applies to you.

Before you move in

Before you move in, we will:

  • carry out a pre-tenancy assessment
  • explain your tenancy responsibilities, including paying rent and other charges
  • discuss any care and support needs for you or members of your household
  • show you around the property and answer your questions

We will also give you:

  • your tenancy agreement and explain it
  • the gas safety certificate and electrical safety certificate
  • the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)

We will also take your photograph when you sign your tenancy agreement.

After you move in

We will visit you again to:

  • check you have settled into your new home
  • make sure you know how to access our services
  • answer any questions you have

Your housing officer will contact you to arrange an appointment.
