Fire safety for council homes

How to reduce fire risks

Follow the advice below to help reduce fire in your home.

  • Avoid leaving cooking appliances unattended.
  • Avoid deep fat frying and cooking oils. Have a fire blanket nearby. Consider an air fryer instead.
  • Avoid using lit candles if possible. Make sure they are positioned safely and not left unattended.
  • Avoid smoking, especially when tired or in bed. Always ensure that cigarettes are extinguished.
  • Avoid leaving clothes and materials directly on or against heat sources.
  • Never overload sockets and extensions. Always use good quality electrical equipment
  • Never use barbecues inside or on any balconies.
  • Always keep communal areas clear of combustible items. These areas are sterile. We have a zero-tolerance approach to leaving combustible items in communal areas.
  • Seek advice and permission if you intend to purchase or use an electrical mobility scooter, E-bike or E-scooter in your property. These cannot be stored in communal areas under any circumstance.
