Budding local artists from Moorcroft and The Vyne Centres for Community will showcase their artistic talents at two exhibitions at The Lightbox Gallery and Museum during August.
`Stitching Your Memories' (Tues 5 Aug - Fri 5 Sept) is a thought-provoking exhibition exploring the personal memories and experiences of each artist through the medium of fabric. With Surrey-based artist, Sue Halloway, the project explored different types of stitching technics, from knitting to crochet.
`Art from The Vyne' (Wed 13 Aug - Sun 7 Sept) is the culmination of a series of workshops held earlier this year at The Vyne for users of the Centre. Over a period of weeks, users explored different types of painting technics with fabric artist, Kathryn Hitchings, before creating a fascinating painting for the exhibition.
Rib Davis, Special Projects Manager at The Lightbox, said: "We were keen to work with members of the local community so approached The Vyne and Moorcroft Centres for the Community. Over time, each project grew organically as users decided amongst themselves what type of project interested them. With assistance from the artists, they developed the projects to the fascinating and varied exhibitions we see today."
Cllr Melanie Whitehand, Portfolio Holder for Centres for the Community, added: "We were delighted to work with The Lightbox. Everyone has a creative side and these community-based art projects are a very successful at showcasing what older members of our community can create by learning new skills and developing their existing skills."
Both projects were coordinated by The Lightbox, in conjunction with Woking Borough Council, and funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. The exhibitions are free to attend.
