Woking Park play area refurbishment swings into action

04 July 2014

Children, parents and visitors to Woking Park can look forward to improved and extended play facilities this autumn, as work begins on an innovative new play area, thanks to significant investment by Woking Borough Council.

Following a comprehensive consultation process with local residents and their families, the Council has once again teamed up with play equipment specialist, Russell Leisure, to deliver an exciting and inclusive jungle-themed play area featuring a variety of play equipment for children of different ages and abilities.

The refurbishment works will include extending the play area site by reinforcing the existing embankment to bring these areas back into use as part of the play area and an additional fenced `dog free' picnic area adjacent to the play area.

Play equipment will include jungle multi-play towers incorporating bridges, tunnel, climbing nets, zip-wire and monkey bars; Amazonian steamer play boat; swings; roundabout; see-saw; springers; play house; jungle animal sculptures; balance equipment; water play; sand play and, the most popular item with children at the consultation, two parallel embankment slides! To enhance the jungle theme experience, the play area will also feature exotic plants and shrubs.

Works will commence on Monday 7 July and are anticipated to be completed by early November 2014.

Cllr David Bittleston, Portfolio Holder for Cultural and Community Development, said: "The Council is committed to investing and improving play area facilities across the Borough. Woking Park play area is the busiest of our 38 play areas and this investment means the Council will create an exciting, inclusive and contemporary play area that will appeal to wide range of ages and abilities.

"While much of the existing equipment is dated and needs replacing, we appreciate that the refurbishment works will cause disruption to young families over the busy summer months. However, I hope that parents and children will be patient during this time as Woking Park will become a destination play area for the Borough and beyond providing endless hours of enjoyment to children for years to come."
