CCTV in Woking

Closed circuit television (CCTV) plays an important role in helping to reduce the fear of crime.

CCTV cameras help prevent, detect and deter crime. They can be used to generate evidence for civil and criminal court proceedings. Knowing that CCTV is in place also encourages the use of our town centre facilities.

The network of CCTV surveillance cameras in Woking was set up to support the work of the Safer Woking Partnership. The system is staffed and operated by Surrey Police. We support it by providing a fully comprehensive maintenance contract.

We currently have CCTV cameras in these locations:

  • Woking town centre: 66 cameras
  • Woking Borough Council car parks: 598 cameras
  • West Byfleet village: 19 cameras
  • Knaphill village: 5 cameras
  • Woking railway station: 9 cameras
  • Camberley town centre: 28 cameras

Code of practice and operating procedures

The CCTV system is operated in accordance with all requirements and principles of the Human Rights Act 1998 – legislation.gov.uk and the General Data Protection Regulation 2018 – ICO.

The public interest in Woking's CCTV is protected by a comprehensive code of practice. A clear audit trail of practices and procedures ensures that the system stands up to scrutiny, both in terms of the evidence gathered and the activities of its users, owners and operators.
