Renew your vehicle licence
Vehicle licence renewal, what you need, costs and fees.
To drive a taxi or private hire vehicle, you must hold a valid vehicle licence.
A vehicle licence is valid for 12 months. You must renew your licence before it expires. Any renewal applications received after the date of expiry will be processed as a new vehicle application.
You must send us your renewal application at least 10 working days before the licence expiry date.
Renewal fees
The renewal fee for a vehicle licence is £225 per year.
What you need to renew your vehicle licence
You will receive a reminder letter and application form 2 months before your licence renewal date.
You will also need your:
- completed vehicle licence renewal form
- vehicle registration document
- valid MOT certificate, if applicable
- valid insurance certificate
- vehicle inspection certificates, 6 month and current
Vehicle inspection
When you renew your vehicle licence, you will have to provide the vehicle inspection certificates. You will have received this from your most recent 6-month inspection with a current valid inspection.
If you do not provide these certificates, it will delay the renewal process and you may incur additional surcharges.

We will not process your application without all of the required documents.
Pay for your renewal
Once you have completed your application, you will need to pay for your renewal.
Expired vehicle licence
If your vehicle licence has expired you are not allowed to use your vehicle for private hire work. You can only start work when you have:
- a new licence and plates
- the plates are displayed on the vehicle in accordance with the conditions of licence
