Fire safety for council homes

Fire safety checks in council homes and how you can reduce the risk of fire.

Fire safety checks

Fire risk assessments are undertaken periodically in council homes and blocks of flats.

You may see a fire risk assessor carrying out fire risk assessment in your block. They may knock at your door to ask you about fire safety, look at your front door or check if you have a smoke detector.

Sometimes we need to access your property to carry out a more detailed inspection to support other works. We ask all tenants to support these visits, to ensure your fire safety and that of others.

You can help us by allowing access to your home. We aim to give you suitable notice, unless there is an emergency and we need urgent access.

We will not notify individual homes during a communal area inspection. There may be a noticeboard update to alert residents when an assessor will be working at their block.

Smoke detection

Smoke alarms are proven to save lives. They act as an early warning device that can detect early stages of fire. If a smoke alarm activates within your home, it means there is a cause for action.

If you do not have a smoke alarm, report this to us immediately.

We maintain any smoke detectors installed by us as part of a programme of inspection and replacement.

You must carry out a weekly test to ensure that your smoke detector remains working in between these inspections. If you press the test button and nothing happens, contact us immediately.
