Reducing Smoking Related Litter

Smoking related litter within Woking is currently a big problem, and Woking Borough Council are taking steps to change peoples perception of litter and to change the norm of people dropping smoking related litter onto the floor.

In October and November 2014, the Council ran an enforcement campaign, serving fixed penalty notices on people seen dropping any kind of litter onto the floor.

In 2014 packs were produced and sent out to all businesses outlining what the problem is, the law surrounding littering, steps businesses can take to help prevent smoking relating litter and also giving businesses the opportunity to sign up to an Environmental Charter. The business pack is available to download.

Anyone who drops litter could be subject to a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) of 100 payable within 14 days. A reduced rate of 50 is applied for payment within 10 days. Failure to pay a FPN could result in prosecution at a Magistrates' Court and a maximum penalty of up to 2500 upon conviction.
