Domestic pest control
The Council provides a pest control service to the residents in the Borough using an appointed pest control contractor, to enable the effective control of the following pests only:
- mice (inside your home)
- rats (within the boundary of your home and/or garden)
- squirrels (inside your home) and
- wasps (nests that are below gutter level only, unless there is safe access from inside the property, i.e. from a boarded loft area, or scaffolding is erected on the outside of the building. Please note the nest is not taken away.
To book a treatment
Residents can book a treatment by telephone on 01483 755855, or via our contractors online request form. Where a request is made on line, our contractor will phone you back during their office hours to confirm details and arrange an appointment .
Please note: The Pest control service provided by the Council is for domestic properties only. Different charges will apply in the case of commercial premises or businesses, including landlord.
The Council's pest control contractor will visit you within two working days of your enquiry, if requested, between 8.00am and 5.00pm. Appointments will be made for am or pm only according to the day and the location within the Borough.
Fees and charges
The charges must be paid before work is started. This is usually taken at the time of booking the appointment.
Pest control charges are half price for anyone in receipt of the following benefits: income support, pension credit, job seekers allowance (income and contribution based), council tax benefit, or housing benefit. You will be required to show proof of benefit and a utility bill to the contractor when they visit. All fees and charges are reviewed annually and are subject to change on 1 April each year.
A full refund will be given if the appointment is cancelled before the day of the visit.
The Council offers a free insect identification and advice service to enable you to treat household pests yourself. Please bring in a specimen in an airtight container, together with your contact details and we will advise you accordingly.
Complaints about pests
The Council has powers under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 to ensure that land owners and occupiers keep their land free from rats and mice or any items that may provide food or harbourage for them. If you have a complaint of this nature please call 01483 743840 for further information.
