Refugees celebrated in Woking

The valued contribution Woking’s refugees make to the Borough will be celebrated with a fun and thought provoking evening comprising a range of culturally diverse entertainment on Tuesday 19 June 2018.
From 6pm at the HG Wells Conference and Events Centre, the event will celebrate the experiences and customs of Woking’s refugees in support of National Refugee Week’s twentieth year.
Included will be speakers, performances and featured artwork from the local Women’s Liaise Group, Amina Khayyam’s south asian dance, Surrey Arts Orchestra, The DeVyne Dancers, Maybury Infants School and poetry (nasheed and naat) recitals by members of Woking’s Mosque.
Cllr Colin Kemp, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “Woking has an enduring history of welcoming refugees and asylum seekers. We are fully committed to ensuring they are included and respected. Woking refugees have enriched our communities, contributed to our sports and culture, society and economy. Our annual celebration of Refugee Week is for everyone in Woking to join in.”
