Woking will be the centre of a fun and thought provoking week of free events, all kicked off with a major launch evening comprising a range of culturally diverse entertainment. The experiences and contributions of Woking’s refugees will be brought together and celebrated in support of National Refugee Week from 19 to 25 June 2017.

The launch event will also showcase an extensive exhibition of artwork by the Borough’s schools and community groups on the theme of Journey Together.

Starting at 7pm on Tuesday 20 June at St.Dunstan’s Church, the launch event will include a range of guest speakers, performances, including a play reading by the Woking Community Play Association, classical Hindu dance, vocal performances by Bashir Maidani and Qasaida performances, drumming and more. After the performances a shared community Iftar meal will be served (breaking of the fast during Ramadan).

Cllr Mark Pengelly, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Cultural Services said: “Woking has a long history of welcoming refugees and asylum seekers. We are fully committed to ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect. We want refugees to enrich our communities, contributing to our sports and culture, society and economy. Refugee Week is a celebration of this and is for everyone in Woking to join in.”
