A County-wide initiative to improve health amongst older adults is set to gain momentum again in Woking from January 2017, as a programme of sports and activities specifically aimed at people over 50 is launched.

Men and women of all abilities will have the chance to participate in a wide range of reasonably priced courses, including, swimming, movement and dance, tennis, bowls, badminton, cricket, jogging, table tennis, squash, seated exercise and disability sports.

The initiative is funded by Sport England and in partnership with Active Surrey, Surrey County Council and Woking Borough Council. Talking about the initiative, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Beryl Hunwicks, said: “The primary message we want to give to the public is that physical activity doesn’t have to be heavily strenuous to be good for you, or help you lead a longer, happier, healthier life. This initiative saw great success in its pilot year in 2016 and has continued to grow in popularity since then. We want as many people as possible across the Borough to give sport a go and we are delighted to be able to continue running these exciting programmes, at affordable rates, to encourage them to do so.”

Get Active 50+ came into existence after it was revealed that 40% of adults in Surrey, or one in four, do not achieve the Chief Medical Officer’s recommendations of 150 minutes physical activity per week. It offers a chance for over 50s to kick start their New Year’s Resolutions at a low cost. Prices, dates and venues vary depending on the course.
