Temporary traffic signals

A licence is required to erect temporary traffic signals on the highway. Within Woking's town centre boundaries, issuing these licences is our responsibility.

The signals must operate in vehicle actuated mode and the signal heads must be positioned at locations visible to approaching traffic. All temporary signing must be in accordance with chapter eight of the Traffic Signs Manual and information boards must be provided on site with telephone numbers.

How to apply

Apply for a licence via the Surrey Argonaut website

Applications must be received at least one week in advance.

Documents required

You will need to send us a method statement with your online application explaining how the work will be carried out. Proof of public liability insurance is required with a minimum cover of £5 million against third-party risks.

Fees and charges

There is no charge for the licence application. However, if switching off any permanent signals is required, you must contact us in advance so the necessary arrangements can be made. A fee is payable for switching off permanent signals.
