How to qualify for a driver’s licence

To qualify you must have held a full DVLA driver's licence for motor cars for at least 12 months. You must also demonstrate that you are:

  • a fully competent driver
  • physically and mentally fit
  • know the streets and principal buildings in Woking borough
  • a 'fit and proper' person without serious criminal or traffic convictions
  • have a right to work in the UK.

We also require all licensed drivers to have a Level 2 Certificate in Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver. There are numerous providers of this course and it is the applicant's responsibility to seek a suitable provider to best serve their needs. It is advisable to search online for this course.

All our licensed drivers are required to know and follow the standards set out in our Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Handbook.

Criminal convictions

The application will either be reviewed and processed under ‘delegated authority’ or in certain cases be put before the Licensing Committee, depending on the seriousness and relevance of the conviction.

Read our guidelines for more information.

Licence duration

A driver’s licence is valid for three years from the issue date. You must renew your licence before it expires.

Make sure you begin your renewal application at least two months before the licence expiry date. We need time to process it and carry out the relevant checks.
