Get Active 50+

Get Active 50+ in Woking

Woking Borough Council in partnership with Active Surrey and Surrey County Council Public Health Team has launched Get Active 50+ For longer, healthier, happier lives, funded by Sport England for people aged 50 or over.

The project aims to improve health amongst older adults across the county following the revelation that 40% of adults in Surrey do not achieve the CMO recommendations of 150 minutes physical activity per week. With almost one in four adults deemed physically inactive. In other words, they don't do 30 minutes of physical activity per week.

Active Surrey and its partners have developed a programme of sports and physical activities which appeal to the older adults with good reach to both men and women. Activities on offer include swimming, movement and dance, tennis, bowls, badminton, cricket, jogging, seated exercise, table tennis, squash and disability sports.

Sport England support

This project is one of over 40 projects to secure a share in 8.2 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England. Encouraging people to give sport a go, the fund empowers local communities to reach out to people who for one reason or another don't exercise. Announcing the funding, Sport England Director of Community Sport, Mike Diaper, said: "It's great to be working with innovative projects like this one in Surrey, which offer more people the chance to get active in a way that suits them best. Given the overwhelming benefits of being active, its important that age, gender, or income never prevents anyone from taking part."
